Although he spent most of his career in Los Angeles working in graphic design, motion graphics, and other art-related fields, he was always cooking. His dream was to one day retire and return to Maui to start a small food business. In 2015, this plan was accelerated when his wife, an attorney, suffered a disabling head injury. Life changed dramatically; he attended culinary school, and they quickly returned home to Maui—where the pace was calmer—so he could take care of her. It was then that Only Ono BBQ was born.
He now operates a large kitchen trailer in Maikai Market, located at 73 S. Puunene Ave, Kahului, serving Chinese BBQ, Chinese baked goods, dim sum, and occasionally Texas BBQ. There are specials every day of the week! The trailer is open Wednesday (Chinese Wings Day), Thursday (Eastern BBQ meets Western BBQ—think Big Beef Ribs, Texas Brisket, and pork ribs), and Friday & Saturday (Dim Sum & Den Sum Days).
Only Ono can also be found at Wailuku First Friday, Kihei Fourth Friday, Maui Sunday Market, Maui Matsuri, Agfest, Rinzai Mission Bon Dance, and the 808 Night Market in their signature red and gold Only Ono tent, serving Chinese BBQ and bakery items.
